I Hate Lavender

Now most people would say that is a heavy statement.  I use the word hate, which of course is strong language and I could tone it down I suppose.  If I did tone it down, however, it would not convey the absolute loathing I feel when the perfumes, heavily scented with the frangrant flower billow over my senses.

By now you are wondering why I even stated this.  Why should you care?  You should care because this is a post about essential oils.  And no matter who you are, lavender is at the core of essential oils.  Not the lavender of department stores though.  No, the true essence of lavender.  That scent that reminds you of being in a field and it gently blows past, enveloping and dissipating in a matter of seconds.  This lavender, this is the heart of essential oils.

Essential oils are are non-water soluble photochemical distilled from various parts of a plant.  They are the true essence.  Eastern cultures and Native cultures discovered long ago the health benefits of those things that come from nature.  Essential oils are just one way of doing that.  There are many ways to use essential oils, if you are interested in more than just diffusing or topical uses, please do your research.  I do not ingest or mix with food, as that is information I have not done research on and am not really interested in.

That does bring me back to lavender though.  6-7 drops of a lavender essential oil dropped into a water diffuser, 3-4 drops straight on a cotton ball or mixed in a roller with a carrier oil (apricot kernel oil is my favorite) have an amazing effect on most people.  Lavender is a natural calmer.  It can help you sleep, it can ease anxiety, it can help bring high tension down to natural levels.

We diffuse it downstairs at night for the dogs.  Yep, for the dogs.  Our Newfoundland can be a little high strung when none of her people around, and they sleep in the living room. I discovered that a little lavender essential oil in the diffuser, which is in the dining room, dissipates enough through the downstairs to help her sleep through the night.  I do not have it directly where she is because the effects of heavy doses is not known on animals, so I have it away from them, where she can get the benefits of it simply being there, without harming her.

If I am traveling and can’t take a diffuser, I will take some cotton balls and a small vial of lavender, and right before I go to bed I will put some lavender on a cotton ball and tuck it under my pillow.  This allows it to be close and scented, but not be overwhelming.

So while I do hate lavender, with a passion, the uses and the purity of it are highly beneficial. I have discovered that even I can tolerate that which I detest, for the benefits of a good night’s sleep, a little less anxiety and a general calm within the air.

Today’s Tarot:

Ten of Cups – On the Ten of Cups, there is a couple holding each other while facing a beautiful house and a green garden. Beside them, there are two children playing joyously. The couple is seen holding each other in a loving and romantic embrace, while the children are freely playing. The couple seems to be in a stable relationship, while also blessed with the abundance of a comfortable home and beautiful children. The green land signifies fertility, and the river shows how freely the feelings of the couple are flowing, meaning that their relationship is quite peaceful. Above in the sky, there are ten cups, shaped in an arc, which are meant to symbolize blessings from heaven. The rainbow behind them shows the end of hard times and sorrows, and a new happy life where each and every one

Anticipation and Anxiety

Oh yes, the two of them go hand in hand, especially when the wait is prolonged or we want something badly.  One of the things that I am working on now, within my own path and my own life, is controlling the anxiety that goes with the anticipation.

Anxiety can be crippling.  It can cause heart palpitations, sweating, shaking, headaches…all of which can be dealt with fairly easy.  However, it can also cause complete shut down for some.  The fear of not knowing, literally paralyzes them.  Keeps them indoors, creates scenarios that they can’t deal with.

There are things that can be done to mitigate some of the crippling anxiety that happens. Deep breathing, slow inhales and exhales, that bring a sense of calm to you.  You can take it further and do a full grounding.  Grounding is giving yourself a connection to the earth, in Wicca/Pagan practices it is a connection with Mother Earth.  You give her your anxiety and she gives you back peace.  When you have this sense of calm within from your deep breathing, feel your feet push the energy into the ground (grounding used to be called earthing), and let go, feel the earth push back the peace and calm.

You can also meditate, if you have some more time.  Take a few minutes, put on soothing music, or find a YouTube or amazon meditation channel, spend some time within yourself, finding the peace that lies at the center.  Meditation is good for everyone at some point, but during a high anxiety time it is one of the best ways to resettle yourself.

Scents also work well.  Candles or diffusers that have a lavender scent to them will help your nerves. As will Vetiver (placed on a cotton ball and applied to your pulse points).  Other scents that work well in a diffuser are Bergamot, Chamomile and Frankincense. All of these are going to help with anxiety and to calm your nerves.

What do you do to help your anxiety when you are nervous or anticipating something?
